The Spectrum of Earthshine: Detecting Earth’s Biosignatures from Afar 1. Scientific Background

چکیده
Can we detect life on an unresolved Earth-like extrasolar planet? Future space missions will provide us with the first images and low-resolution spectra of exoEarths, and the question of the presence of biogenic spectral signatures in these data will undoubtedly feed an animated debate. Our only reference point at present is our own planet. In this lab you will measure the integrated spectrum of the Earth and assess the evidence for biogenic signatures.

Vegetation's red edge: a possible spectroscopic biosignature of extraterrestrial plants.
Earth's deciduous plants have a sharp order-of-magnitude increase in leaf reflectance between approximately 700 and 750 nm wavelength. This strong reflectance of Earth's vegetation suggests that surface biosignatures with sharp spectral features might be detectable in the spectrum of scattered light from a spatially unresolved extrasolar terrestrial planet. We assess the potential of Earth's st...

Since 1998 the Earthshine Project has been a collaborative effort between Big Bear Solar Observatory/New Jersey Institute of Technology and California Institute of Technology. Cyclic spectroscopic observations of the dark and bright sides of the moon (or earthshine and moonshine, respectively) have been carried out in the visible region at Palomar Observatory. From these data, the ratio of the ...
متن کاملEarthshine Observation of Vegetation and Implication for Life Detection on Other Planets A Review of 2001–2006 Works
The detection of exolife is one of the goals of very ambitious future space missions that aim to take direct images of Earth-like planets. While associations of simple molecules present in the planet’s atmosphere (O2, O3, CO2, etc.) have been identified as possible global biomarkers, this paper reviews the detectability of a signature of life from the planet’s surface, i.e. the green vegetation...

متن کاملGlobally integrated measurements of the Earth’s visible spectral albedo
We report spectroscopic observations of the earthshine reflected from the Moon. By applying our well-developed photometry methodology to spectroscopy, we were able to precisely determine the Earth’s reflectance, and its variation as a function of wavelength through a single night as the Earth rotates. These data imply that planned regular monitoring of earthshine spectra will yield valuable, ne...
